Term 3 Assignments
Assignment 1: PORTRAITS & Utilizing Studio Lighting
Reflection
Light Grey Background:
This image is unique because it shows Sam's emotions. She looks like she's wearing a genuine smile instead of a fake smile just for the camera. When the photo was taken, she was trying not to laugh at something going on behind the camera. This portrait is unique also because I used the law of thirds when taking it.
There was a light shining down on Sam to the right. There was a diffused light shining at eye level to the right of her.
The mood being set is happy. The lighting reveals her face well and her smile looks genuine.
To heighten that mood, I could diffuse the light that is to the left of her because it makes the left side of her face look too shiny.
Dark Grey Background:
This image is unique because it shows Liz's emotions. She's in the middle of laughing and the position of her hands on her hips makes her look kind of confident and shows a goofy side of her. This portrait is unique also because I used the law of thirds when taking it.
There was a diffused light shining down on Liz to the left of her. There was a white poster on the wall to the right of her, which was used to reflect some of the diffused light onto the right side of her face.
The mood being set is happy. The lighting shines bright particularly on her face, which reveals her smile nicely. She has her hands placed on her hip which creates a sense of confidence and silliness.
To heighten the mood, I could place a diffused light to the right of her to help reveal her more. This would help you see the bottom of her shirt and the right side of her face more clearly. It could also help get rid of the shadow the is being cast to the right of her.
Black Background:
This image is unique because it shows a possible characteristic of Jenn. She has a slight smile but the shadows on her face make her look more dark and mischievous. This portrait is unique also because I used the law of thirds when taking it.
To the right, there was a diffused light shining down on her. To the left, there was a white poster on the wall, which was used to reflect some of the light onto the left side of her face.
The mood being set is sort of mischievous. Jean has a slight smile but the shadows on her make it look more dark and as if the left side of her is starting to fade in with the background.
To set a more mischievous mood, I could diffuse some of the light to the right of her to create more shadows. To make the mood a bit lighter and less mischievous, I could place a diffused light to the left that would shine down on her and reveal the left side of her face more. This would get rid of the shadows and create a happier mood. It would also stop her from looking like she is starting to blend in with the background.

Assignment 3: Double Exposure
Reflection
I chose the portrait of Jenn because it's the one I favor most out of all the portraits I took. I chose the image of the plant because I like it and I thought the texture of the leaves would show up well when combined with the portrait. Also, I thought that nature overall would make a nice looking background for a portrait.
The combination of these photos creates a mysterious kind of mood. The way the photos are combined, it looks as if Jenn is kind of hidden in the dark by leaves, and is peeking out at the viewer. The fact that the photo is black and white darkens the mood and makes it more mysterious.
I think the image is successful because both images are clearly shown, and the detail is still there. The texture of the leaves still show, as well as the detailing on Jenn's shirt. The black background of the portrait blended well it the image of the plant. When the black areas on the plant image were blended, Jenn could be seen easily through those areas of the photo when the photos were combined. Jean was placed behind those areas, and the way he stems divide her facial features into sections make the photo more interesting, as well as the fact that she is on the 2nd vertical third.
I would like to, if possible, make the area where Jenn and the leaf combine more clear.

I feel that these images are satisfactory.
The image of my mom shows my favorite person. The viewer is kind of close up to her face, which could help represent how close my relationship is with my mom. The viewer can see her face can and her smile clearly. Her smile could make the viewer feel warmth and positive energy, which helps portray how I personally feel when I'm around my mom. The image of my bedroom wall shows my favorite place. In the image, the viewer looks up at the wall. This could represent how I look up at my wall and around my bedroom with admiration and with the feeling of safety and protection. The image of my cat shows my favorite thing. The viewer sees a close-up of its face and can look straight into its eyes. This gives the viewer a feeling as if they know the cat, which helps to demonstrate how fond I am of my cat.
If I were someone's favorite person, I would want to be photographed in a way that pleases them. I would want to be photographed the way that reminds them of why I'm their favorite person.
